Level One.  [L1 and L2 Combo Course Outline] link

Level 1 Kayaking [L1] – this course is a quick 3 hour session for beginners providing an introduction to basic paddling skills and safety. It will give insight  to the fun in kayaking  as well as a chance to try different boats and paddles. A quality kayak, pfd (life vest), paddle and other gear is provided.

All Instructors are ACA certified. No experience necessary; this is a workshop for beginners. We suggest this course before taking any of our trips or other courses.

 9am – Noon or 1pm – 4pm. Cost $60 or $ 110 when you sign up for both L 1 & L 2

Level 1 [L1] morning class is often followed by Level 2 [L2] afternoon class 
  Participants may take either one or both classes.

 Class Dates are on the schedule, call for private class

Level Two

Level 2 Kayaking [L2] – this workshop spends more time on rescue skill development. Self and assisted rescues beginning with the wet exit are taught and practiced, so plan to get wet. This is a 3-4 hour session, held on flat water. A top end Kayak, paddle, pfd. (life vest) and other gear is provided. This is a necessary course for anyone who has, or is considering buying a kayak. Participating in both L1 and L2 courses will give you the skills for most of our trips. All of our Instructors are ACA certified.

 The skill assessment card is available.

 1am – 4 pm $60 or $110 for both L 2 &  L  1 if taken together as our Combo

After Taking the L1 and L 2 cflasses and practicing a bit ; most paddlers follow the Kayak touring/Coastal/Sea kayak track, on to L 2 Plus and beyond [L3 and L4]

Level 2 Plus; is the upgrade course that reinforces what was learned in 1 and 2 with specific assessment as well as more strokes and manuevers in preparation for More in L 3.

Level Three [L3] Sea Kayaking – this workshop concentrates on stroke and maneuver refinement, and how to paddle in conditions. We will work on strokes and maneuvers utilizing the best techniques for body, boat and blade. The focus will be on boat control using edging for grace and efficiency. We will spend time on enhancing all your strokes and introduce the bow draw, hanging draw, draw on the move, as well as low and high brace turns using skidding and carving principals .We often video, so you can see and analyze your progress..

L 1 and 2 classes or relevant experience are prerequisite. A high performance sea kayak, pfd (life vest), top end paddle and other gear is provided. Many will  take this course more than once as they progress in skill and understanding.

This is an all day class, 9 am until 4 pm, $110  Plus direct expenses*
 

Level 3 [L3]      class dates on the schedule

Level Four

 Kayak Touring and Navigation [L4]– this full day course/trip is conducted on tidal water (Chesapeake Bay) in sea kayaks and brings together skills and information learned in L 1 – L3 in an open water environment,  wind, waves and currents. We take a trip and practice paddling maneuvers and rescue techniques, along with navigation and "Rules of the Nautical Road". We will try to launch and land in small easy surf to teach basic surf procedures. You should be comfortable in moderate conditions and familiar with L1 – L3 skills before  this course. Participants may have their own equipment. Our kayaks and gear are available. 9am – 4pm $110 plus direct expenses*
Level 4 [L4]     Dates as demand dictates - ask please.

Other Clinics and Courses

River Kayaking and EZ Whitewater 1 & 2 Day WW Clinics up through class two.

We teach one and two day clinics (in a row is best) for whitewater wannabees that covers the strokes and manuevers on flatwater, then on easy local whitewater. This is a lot of fun and provides valuable cross training and skill for sea and touring kayakers who want to try the short boats. We provide the kayaks and gear or bring your own. The class is usually limited to 4 participants. Cost $250, call Mike to schedule.   

Whitewater Canoe – this full day course is conducted on and in whitewater using properly outfitted solo and tandem canoes. We will work on paddling strokes , rescues and maneuvers for playing on our rivers bends, waves, currents, eddy’s and hydraulics.

You should be comfortable kneeling in a ww canoe and know the strokes, including braces. This is an intense fun course for those with their own equipment although we have some boats and gear available for rental.

9am – 4pm $110  Plus Direct Expenses*
 

Clinics

Navigation –  this is a 2 hour classroom session using a power point presentation and other tools to give you chart and compass reading skills, along with the ability to plot courses and plan trips. Navigational aids are provided but feel free to bring your own. 7pm – 9pm $20
 

Surf – this clinic is to learn surf characteristics and tactics. We work on coming in and going out in mild surf conditions. We will work on surf technique and understanding of this unique environment. You must have your own kayak, paddle and helmet or can rent from us. If you do not already possess good bracing and rolling skills this course is not recommended. Time depends on conditions $110*  Plus direct expenses

Safety and Rescue in Kayak or Canoe – we concentrate on the different techniques in self and assisted rescues. This is a 5 hour session with education and a lot of hands on practice. It is a great place to experiment and develop what works for you in your boat with your gear. If you don’t have any you can rent from us. This course follows the BCU Kayak and Canoe Safety Test. An assessment card is available.

9am – 3pm $110 Plus Direct Expenses*

*** note some classes mayl incur direct expenses over and above normal instructor and class fees. These may include travel to remote venues, additional equipment, books etc. Direct expenses when required will always be quoted to the participants prior to commitment.

Trip Leaders - We have developed this course to help instructors and others who lead private, club, or commercial trips face  risk, liability and management issues. We will plan a trip using navigational aids and following Nautical rules. There will be plenty of “scenarios” to get as close as we can to the real thing. All those acting as trip leaders or coordinators for clubs, schools or camps, would benefit from taking this course at least once and probably annually as continuing education and seasonal tune up. This is part of providing a “standard of care.”  A skill assessment card is available. 9am – 4pm $110

We pay out 10% of our income to conservation directed foundations and are partners with the Potomac River Conservancy and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, as well as major sponsors of the West Virginia River Coalition.

We also provide discounts to ACA members, Reston Association members, REI members and active duty military personnel.

Within the "public course" concept, CKAPCO teaches Private Classes. It may involve the same courses listed above but taught to less than a normal size class . A normal class is usually 5 or 6 students per instructor. Private Instruction may involve teaching a specific student advanced skills on a one on one basis.

Generally speaking Private instruction is charged at a $50 per hour week day rate, $200 per day minimum.Rates for 2 are  $35 per hour each, and rates for 3 and up are $30 per hour each.  All private instruction is tailored to the students requirements;  cost and details are settled in advance.
